The scientific study of sex is a relatively recent development.

The physical and biological sciences have a long history of scientific investigation dating back hundreds of years. The anatomical and physiological aspects of human functioning also have a long history of study, yet within that total body of knowledge there was little data collected regarding sexuality until the nineteenth century. Up to that time, almost everything we knew with respect to the anatomical, physiological, and emotional components of human sexuality was merely the result of speculation and opinion, often inaccurately tied to the political and religious doctrines of the times.

In the last 100 years, human sexuality has finally become an area of legitimate scientific interest and has finally been looked at more objectively. This chapter will discuss the major historical developments in the recent history of sex research, with emphasis on the prominent individuals involved, the general trends that have emerged in terms of the research methodologies, and the general findings that have been reported.
